Hackney Diamonds is an intriguing title chosen by The Rolling Stones for their long-awaited new album.
“Hackney Diamonds” is an old East London slang phrase that refers to broken glass. Specifically, it describes the shards of glass left over from broken car windows and shop windows resulting from robberies.
In a similar vein, East Londoners also use the term “Dalston Diamonds”, which specifically references a particular area within Hackney.
The legendary band’s 24th studio record, ‘Hackney Diamonds’, marks their first collection of original music in 18 years. During a live press conference, host Jimmy Fallon asked Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood about the album’s title. Keith Richards explained, “It got called ‘Hackney Diamonds’ because we were flinging ideas around for titles, and we went from ‘Hit And Run’ to ‘Smash And Grab’. And somehow, between that, we came up with album which is like a variation of both”.
Mick Jagger humorously added, “Yeah, it’s like when you get your windscreen broken on Saturday night in Hackney, and all the bits go on the street… that’s Hackney Diamonds”. To put the rather overheated hype around the new Rolling Stones album in superfan-quibbling terms, album is not their best work since “Some Girls”, released some 45 years ago but it is their best since “Tattoo You”.
Yet the album’s highlight is “Live by the Sword” the one song where the band’s longtime lineup is reunited not because the song itself is exceptional, but because it reunites the band’s peerless rhythm section of some 37 years, Watts and bassist Bill Wyman, and recaptures the inimitable laid-back uptightness that is a trademark of the band’s sound. Wyman once explained it by saying “Most bands follow the drummer. We don’t: Charlie follows Keith”, so the drums are a fraction of a second behind the beat. The bounce in the rhythm is unmistakable; longtime fans won’t even need to check the credits they’ll know within seconds.
If there’s a better way to end this rock band 60-plus-year recording career, it’s hard to imagine what it could be.
