The Boy And The Heron Poster Otaku
The work was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, inspired by the novel How Do You Live? (1937) by writer Genzaburo Yoshino. The content tells the story of 12-year-old Mahito (voiced by Soma Santoki), who lost his mother after a fire in Tokyo. Mahito and his father moved to the countryside. Here, the two live with Natsuko (Yoshino Kimura), Mahito’s mother’s younger sister.
The work is set in post-war Japan, opening the journey of discovering the half-real, half-real world of the boy Mahito. According to the Guardian, the film deals with loss and grief, but has a gentle, colorful atmosphere. At first, Mahito had many difficulties adapting to his new life. The encounter with the blue heron was like an invitation, causing Mahito to be drawn into a strange world.
After returning home, Mahito gradually became withdrawn and spoke little. He is often haunted by the incident that caused his mother to die, and does not accept the changes happening around him. One day, Natsuko suddenly disappeared after entering the mysterious castle. Mahito decides to set out to find her, and at the same time decipher his mother’s death. His companion is a talking blue heron (Masaki Suda).
Throughout The Boy and The Heron is Mahito’s journey to adulthood. Losing his mother left him with a wound that is difficult to heal. When arriving in a new land and meeting his great-grandfather, Mahito was faced with two choices: Stay and inherit the legacy to continue maintaining a perfect world without suffering Or go back to the place that hurt you. In the end, Mahito refuses, claiming that suffering is necessary for life, and rejects the lie about everything being perfect.
Through in The Boy And The Heron is adventures with his friends, Mahito gradually accepts the conflict in his soul and finds the right way to live. The director metaphorizes pain as the beginning of life, sending the message: People need to be strong and resilient in facing death. After all suffering, what needs to be done is to look towards the future, creating beautiful values for life.
The music is performed by famous composer Joe Hisaishi, bringing a classic, deep melody, expressing sympathy for the main character’s pain. In grand scenes, Joe Hisaishi uses a symphony to help the audience feel the majesty of nature. In profound scenes, the artist borrows the sound of piano or cello to evoke the characters’ emotions.
The work was well appreciated by experts. The Guardian page wrote: “The Boy and the Heron shows the ‘magic’ in Miyazaki’s cinema. The work is inspired by the director’s childhood experiences to pay tribute to the past”. ScreenRant writer Joshua Fox commented: “The work balances every detail, with many humorous and emotional moments. It all creates an almost perfect story”.
