Lorde Tracklist Poster Album Melodrama
Melodrama is Lorde’s study of being a young woman finding her own conviction in unsteady circumstances. Sometimes, this also involves being single—a breakup and a raucous house party serve as thematic through-lines—but romance is only part of the album’s script.
In the difficult, exhilarating course of the record, written largely when Lorde was 18 and 19, her true reward comes with her embrace of self. As a nod to her clearest pop forbearer, her peace is in accepting that she will, sometimes, end up dancing on her own.
Like her 2013 debut Pure Heroine, the album is a work of sleek self-possession, packed with bursts of peculiar rhymes and production that confound expected song formulas. However, while Heroine cast off the trappings of materialism atop spacious trip-pop, Melodrama catches the mist off of New Wave rhythms that befit the name. Its first single and opening track, “Green Light”, casts a long shadow in its anthemic bliss.
The second song, Sober, is her way of overcoming the post-breakup pain by forgetting herself on the dance floor. The phrase “the truth” in Green Light continues to be repeated but with a completely different perspective: “This is the time when we dance with the truth, move with the truth…”. The following songs all express that spirit. Homemade Dynamite is about partying all night long with a take-no-prisoners attitude. The song has a fast tempo and Lorde sings non-stop as if a fuse is burning.
Coming to The Louvre, she sang about her old love frankly but completely without pain: “I know you’re not my role model, but I still love you”. Even more boldly, Lorde also wanted to turn her heartbeat into a dance and force everyone to dance along. However, Jack Antonoff’s vibrant music could not help Lorde hide her conflicting chaos.
Supercut is a dream about a relationship that is completely contrary to reality: “In my head, I think, I do everything right. When you call, I will forgive you and not argue anymore”. Even after being immersed in ecstasy pills, she still couldn’t escape the fear: “But what will we do when we’re sober?”.
The grimness of Liability makes the already dark atmosphere of Melodrama even more hopeless. “The truth is I’m just a toy that people like, until the tricks stop working and they get bored”, Lorde sings as if pouring out all her feelings. Perfect Places is when Lorde leaves her inner room to step out into the outside world to find the “perfect place” for herself , “I’m only 19 and I’m on fire”, she sings. After taking listeners through the “roller coaster” called Melodrama, Jack Antonoff closed the record with the sound of piano, just like the way it began.
Album will be hard to please but who can expect a second Pure Heroine, but certainly not a record we should ignore. The combination of Lorde’s powerful voice and sharp writing with Jack Antonoff’s skillful production hand has created the best pop record of the year.
At the age of 20, Lorde’s personality is truly mature and clear. In love, she can be troublesome and annoying, but in music, she is truly a burning fire
