Poor Things Summary Poster
Among the bright works at this year’s Oscars, Poor Things caused a lot of controversy among experts, the project directed by Yorgos Lanthimos received 11 Academy nominations and many compliments.
In Poor Things, Lanthimos takes the audience into the setting of 19th century Victorian London (England), but is dotted with surreal elements such as horse-drawn carriages and strange creatures on the streets. In that world, there is a mad scientist like Godwin with strange experiments, bearing some similarities to the story of Frankenstein.
Bella (character by Emma Stone) was originally given life from the family’s strange experiment eccentric scientist Godwin (played by Willem Dafoe). He created her by inserting the brain of an unborn child into the body of a deceased woman. Therefore, Bella has an adult appearance but a child-like mind.
Although carefully raised by Godwin for many years, Bella becomes increasingly curious about the outside world. In the end, she left with a lawyer named Duncan (Mark Ruffalo). The two spent happy days throughout Europe, at the same time Bella began to have physical experiences with her lover. However, disagreements broke out between the two and as a result, Bella chose a brothel in Paris (France) to take refuge.
From the premise of the film, Lanthimos raises interesting questions about the development of human. What if a person had a complete body before the mind developed? keep up? Is human nature bad or good? Between nature and education, which will have a greater influence on people?
The second half of the film delves even deeper into social issues and child identitypeople as well as roles and perspectives for women. Lanthimos continuously delivers philosophical lines, sometimes challenging, sometimes giving the audience a new perspective on social issues. The twist of the film is when Bella develops the most comprehensive view of the world during her period as a prostitute, a career she chose.
Poor Things can bring up all of these hot topics but probably doesn’t encourage viewers to stick to one direction of discussion. The ambivalence in this work (perhaps the most distinctive thing in Lanthimos’s works) by letting the characters and plot not follow a fixed direction, opens up new approaches and enjoyment. The science fantasy nature of Poor Things also brings a realistic perspective. It’s a wonderful, fun, dirty world. And that’s the world we live in.
