Baroness and Red Fang have announced five special co-headlining performances this May, bringing back-to-back sets from two of heavy music’s most beloved bands, for the first time ever.

“It will be great to get out and play some shows with our old friends in Red Fang”, Baroness collectively shared. “Surprisingly, we’ve never properly toured together, so we’re all excited to bring these shows to you this spring. Furthermore, it will be great to have another opportunity to support and perform songs from our latest record, STONE, with you!”.

But Baroness decided to downsize for Stone, their first album in four years, converting an Airbnb along the mountainous edge of Pennsylvania and New York into a studio where they could do everything themselves. This marked the first time that the same group of musicians who recorded the prior Baroness album reconvened to make the next one. Stone, however, begs for an outsider’s input, for someone to have said, “No, that’s not it.” So much of Stone feels like stitched-together composites of what has worked well in the past. Momentum is often squandered, and the electrifying bits rarely rise into something more.

The metal band do try a few novel sounds, but they don’t fare much better. Early on, they devote a quarter of the album to a three-song suite that may be the nadir of their career. A ringer for an overly fussy Clutch jam, “Beneath the Rose” slams into “Choir”, a laughable spoken-word tale about Satan’s mistress murmured above an elementary Motorik improvisation. You can almost picture Baroness in their Appalachian Airbnb, throwing things at the wall just to pretend they stuck.

Red Fang did not set out to be fine. The first song on their 2008 self-titled debut was a bleary-eyed, pop-metal pummel called “Prehistoric Dog”, a hilarious and juvenile burst about alien canines bound for earth on a mission of extinction. “They will erase the human race”, went the perfect and perfectly stupid gambit. “Time to kiss your ass goodbye”. In the video for the surprise hit, the rock band jammed the song repeatedly in a tiny kitchen, waged war against Renaissance Faire agitators, and shot-gunned beer cans until they all vomited on camera, almost in unison.

Red Fang, what can be said? If you happen to be into stoner metal, stoner rock, or anything stoner at all, this is your cup of tea.

In a move that feels like this should have happened years ago, Baroness and Red Fang will be sharing the stage as co-headliners for a short U.S. tour this spring. Focused on the east coast, the five-date run will kick off on May 13 in Winston Salem, North Carolina and come to an end on May 18 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Again, it must be reiterated that these two bands — despite apparently being “old friends” and running in the same musical hemisphere for their entire careers — have never toured together.
