Solar Power Album Lorde Poster
At the age of 25, Lorde seems to have fully experienced the “royal” feeling from the spotlight. After releasing her second studio album Melodrama (2017), the female singer spent four years in hiding in her hometown, stopped using social networks, enjoyed an anonymous life and wrote music. Solar Power is the result from that time period. The 12 songs capture the moment Lorde immersed herself in nature, forgetting reality and letting all her emotions drift into the ocean.
With Solar Power, Lorde is completely in a proactive position, willing to trade her star life indefinitely to be a full-time hippie.
In the opening song The Path, the female singer who calls herself a “teenage millionaire” had a nightmare about camera flashes, now tries to cut off contact with the record label, and leaves fame by drifting to a windy island. “You need someone to bear your pain? Well, that’s not me”, the singer emphasized.
Coming to the title song Solar Power, Lorde revealed that she is not alone. She took off her shirt, bare feet, and led the group of friends running straight towards the beach, behind her boyfriend holding a camera to record the moment. The Album marks the second time Lorde has teamed up with Jack Antonoff – who worked on Melodrama – in both mixed product creative roles. The duo removed the electronic sounds and familiar computer beats (background music) from the previous two albums to make room for rustic instruments such as guitar, drums, saxophone,…
The way she writes music also gradually escapes the popular pop formula, sometimes improvising like writing poetry (The Man With The Ax), using short but not easy to remember choruses (Dominoes). Some songs even don’t have a hook to stick to the listener’s mind but pass by like the sea breeze.
To mold Album, the female singer mixed the calmness of The Mamas & The Papas (California Dreamin’) with the youthfulness of S Club 7 (Bring It All Back), bringing bright seasonal colors to the songs. summer, creating a collection that she calls the “weed album” (cannabis music).
Album would have been born sooner if Pearl had not died. In the final stages, the female singer decided to postpone the release to make adjustments and put her private emotions into the album. Talking to New York Time, she revealed that she also recorded the sounds of waves and cicadas on her cell phone for a while, then included them in the album.
Whether singing about the past or the present, she always cherishes and treats each note with tenderness. She confided that there were many things she wanted to say to Pearl, but there was never enough time. She said that since she was 22 years old, she no longer thought she was a genius. She loves her lover’s silver hair, the way he dances, the t-shirt and the music he likes.
Unlike the first two albums which had sad colors, she injected a lot of positive energy into Solar Power. The female singer proves that not all changes are ugly. Typically, the main character in Dominoes, once a man who looked down on women, now starts a new life by learning yoga and watering plants with his new girlfriend on the rooftop. For herself, Lorde holds similar beliefs. Secrets from a girl (Who’s seen it all) is the present Lorde’s words to the past Lorde: Just open your heart, love will come again.
The album is a musical product that represents Lorde’s ecologist’s vision. To limit the impact on the environment, she decided not to release traditional CDs, nor did she place much emphasis on revenue. The move truly proves the artist’s bravery of the GenZ singer after many years of fighting in showbiz.
Album closes with the image of Lorde rising to the surface, breathing oxygen from the atmosphere. Perhaps after many years of diving in life, she realized one thing: forever immersing herself in the sea of emotions is not the right choice, but dancing in the sun is.
