Band Needtobreathe Songs Meaning
Formed in 1999, the four guys of Needtobreathe have a wealth of performing experience and have three independently released CDs under their belt. Their first major label CD, “Daylight”, was released in 2006 under Sparrow Records. “The Heat” debuted in 2007 and their latest, “The Outsiders”, came out on August 25, 2009. Having received three Dove Award nominations, this band is continuing to climb Christian music charts.
The title track, album, opens this song with a catchy banjo and harmonica-accompanied song musing about being outsiders in this life. It reminds me of the song on Earthsuit called “Foreign”, which is about feeling like you’re in too many places at once and don’t belong anywhere.
Although the band members have Southern roots, their music is not filled with so-called “country twang”, which can make some listeners feel uncomfortable. However, bringing a more refined Southern flow to the lyrics and music really adds to the band’s unique style.
“The ‘Southern thing’ is scary to some people”, lead vocalist Bear Rinehart said in a press release. “But for us, it’s not about the sound, it’s about the feeling. It’s just about having soul in the words you write, the music you play. And that’s something that comes naturally to us”. Bear also stated that “we know this is the best record we’ve ever made”.
“Something Beautiful” is another highlight of the album, describing the desire to touch something beautiful. The song begins to tell the story of someone deep in the ocean, and should he go any deeper? Will he drown? But if he is next to Christ, he will not be overwhelmed and will be moved by something beautiful. “And the water is rising fast / And I’ve been afraid of it for years / We can’t be sure when it will recede / So I won’t leave you…”.
While listening to the album, the passion the group has for their music and lyrics flows out of speakers at the same volume as the composition itself. can’t say that for a vast majority of popular musicians today. Listening to a group that has such a strong connection to their music is hard to come by. Somehow, NEEDTOBREATHE makes this clear on every single one of their 14 songs on “The Outsiders”.
Not only has NEEDTOBREATHE created an extremely diverse musical track list on “The Outsiders”, the group’s love for what they are doing is present on the CD, as well.
