Don Toliver is an immensely talented artist, and his latest album does not fall anything short of a masterful piece showcasing the breadth of his abilities.
Life of a DON was released on October 8 and boasts 16 tracks maintaining true to Don Toliver’s signature eerie, auto-tuned vocals. As an artist, Don Toliver has an almost far away, eerily dreamy aspect to his music. While it could be argued that this album is lacking in highly original lyrics, the cadence of Don Toliver’s beats is what makes both him and this album stand out.
Toliver’s music combines trap and R&B in a way that has never been done before, sounding like a new genre. His musical goal is very simple, like a guideline to help him move forward steadily: “I want people to imagine everything in my music. My sound is very different. I bring a new culture into the music game”.
Using effects like auto-tune and reverb with a clever touch, Toliver may be a new name but the sound is already well defined. Listening to his music, people will think he is an older age than he actually is. L.O.A.D this time is proof of that maturity.
With L.O.A.D, Toliver feels like he’s been doing it all his life and is now simply looking back, picking up the honest notes, “the soundtrack of my life” – as he puts it. It is compared to Netflix’s biggest blockbuster, Squid Game, when writer – director Hwang Dong Hyuk also poured all his career and life into it.
Inspired by Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album in Hawaii, Toliver recorded much of the album in the Venetian Islands, surfing or lounging on boats in between recording sessions. Like West, Toliver did not forget to bring his closest friends. “For a long time, I was in this creative block, a crab in a bucket situation” – he said – “But now, I have gathered a lot of talent and no one can stop us”.
Despite pouring out his heart to L.O.A.D, Toliver shows no signs of stopping. On the contrary, he is ambitious, wanting more for himself, for his family, for his legacy, so that he can become a monument like Michael Jackson, James Brown or Marvin Gaye.
Even more so than with his last album, Toliver confirms in the ears of the listener how masterful a melodist he truly is, and his creativity and personality shine through in this entire album.
