Vintage Scarface Shirt 1983 40th Anniversary
Gangster movies will never die, because any society has its two sides: Angels and Demons. That explains why audiences always love this type of movie, even though it is not for the majority because of its violence and vulgarity. Brian De Palma’s movie “Scarface” not only proves this… but also more!
‘Scarface’ is inspired by the famous original film of the same name by legendary director Howard Hawks in 1932. However, the 1932 film version of “Scarface” is the story of the famous American gangster Al Capone, then “Scarface” (1983) is the nickname of Tony Montana, an immigrant from Cuba to Florida (USA) who became a gangster during the drug boom in the 1980s.
The film is an extremely gritty and bloody fictional story, depicting Tony’s journey from being a low-class gangster – but full of ambition and his desire to boil to the point of daring to do earth-shattering things. – gradually climbed to the top of glory in Miami’s criminal underworld… only to collapse at the last minute in the style of a Greek mythological tragedy.
Inspired by the classic movie “Scarface”, combined with the true events of the Mariel Boatlift evacuation by sea in the spring of 1980 (about 125,000 legal refugees, allowed to immigrate by the Cuban government Florida, USA), Oliver Stone wrote this script while he was recovering from drug addiction.
Reusing the name “Scarface”, Oliver Stone wanted to commemorate director Howard Hawks and Ben Hecht, the screenwriter of the original 1932 film. He named the “scarface guy” Tony Montana, after the name of Joe Montana, his favorite football player.
“Scarface” was officially released in December 1983 and immediately a series of reviews bombarded the film. Despite this, it still grossed $66 million worldwide (equivalent to $180 million at 2010 prices), attracted a large audience of fans, and became an important cultural icon.
The film has influenced hip-hop culture and rap music since the late 1980s. The rap group Geto Boys incorporated several lines from the film into their rap songs. Rap singer Brad Jordan, adopted “Scarface” as his stage name. Hip-hop artist Sean “P. Diddy” Combs admitted he had seen the movie 63 times.
Hip-hop stars have taken the exuberant “gangsta” style of Montana’s Miami property as a model for their homes and videos. Many famous actors today like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have memorized every line and every action of Tony Montana and Manny. More than ten years have passed, but a series of items, clothes, and many other products reminiscent of the movie are still popular. In particular, the film’s grainy black and white poster was a very popular decorative item and is still in production today.
