Smiling Critters In Poppy Playtime Chapter 3
On August 7th, 1982, the 1st 8 Smiling Critters plush toys released at Crossovian Toy Stores. At this time, Playtime Co. made promotional posters for the characters that toy stores would hang for promotional purposes, though 1 poster that said “Catnap is Your Friend” at the time they were running the franchise didn’t really age well.
The gang consisted of DogDay the Dog, the Leader, Bobby BearHug the Bear, the Empath, Catnap the Cat, the Sleeper, Bubba Bubbaphant the Elephant, the Genius, Hoppy Hopscotch the Bunny, the Athlete, PickyPiggy the Pig, the Glutton. Craftycorn the Unicorn, the Artist, and KickinChicken the Chicken, the Cool Kid.
In the first commercial, the Critters only appeared in toy form and couldn’t talk, but in November of the same year, they started using animation for the commercials. Originally before the show animation for the critters was done by a few cartoonists that worked at Playtime. These cartoonists would later do the rap shorts but would eventually leave once the original era ended.
2 of each smiling critters would have a technique that would allow them to exhale scents. DogDay and Hopscotch would be pulled by the ears, Catnap and Bubba would be pulled by the tail, Bearhug and Picky would be booped on the nose, and Kickin and Craftycorn would have their heads scratched.
They became part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative as well as miniature versions of them. They eventually became Playcare’s mascots in the Playtime Co. factory as well as Catnap became the caretaker of Home Sweet Home.
All 8 of the human kids had at least something linked to the main 8 critters. This was a way to reveal the Critters’ lore that they are stuffed animals that come to life and enter a portal to a world of their own, explaining why they have birthdays but don’t age, meaning the Goat Twins are forever kids. Before that, Smiling Critters was just a simple show about animals living in their town.
An exec at SCI quoted in an interview about Smiling Critters coming back that “It was way too 80s to be brought over to our main product”. The songs also appear on live shows throughout the late 80s to early 90s, but there were signs that the era was about to end. Smiling Critters was not included in Playtime’s Orphan Education Program that they did in 1991, but there was a reason for that, and it was that they were about to transition to a new era.
Along with the rights going to the fandom, they formed a company called Smiling Critters Inc., with DogDay as the mascot. At first before a certain announcement coming in 2022, they did audio livestreams, hosted by Connor (in-character KickinChicken), Ember (in-character PickyPiggy), Vancouver (as Bobby BearHug), Harold (as BeaverDen), and Sparky (as Bubba Bubbaphant). The rest of the critters did not appear, despite DogDay being the main character and mascot of the brand.
