The purpose of NHF Day is to raise awareness of how hunters and anglers contribute to the funding of our country’s conservation efforts. More than half of the money received by state conservation organizations comes from the selling of hunting and fishing licenses. Programs for safety, education, and wildlife management are supported by these funds. Additionally, dozens of conservation projects around the nation receive millions of dollars in revenue from excise taxes on sporting goods.
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE HUNTING AND FISHING DAY?
The largest and most successful grassroots organization ever launched to promote outdoor sports and conservation, NHF Day honors hunting, fishing, and shooting. Through planned local, state, and national events, this officially recognized holiday brings together sportsmen and women from around America to honor the rich history of hunting and fishing.
HOW NHF DAY BEGAN
NHF Day was established by Congress in 1971. Senator Thomas McIntyre of New Hampshire sponsored Joint Resolution 117, declaring the fourth Saturday in September of each year to be National Hunting and Fishing Day, in June of that year (NHFD). President Richard Nixon formally established National Hunting and Fishing Day on May 2, 1972, by signing the inaugural proclamation establishing the holiday.
NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY IS ON WHAT DAY?
Every year on the fourth Saturday in September, NHF Day is observed. September 24 will be National Hunting and Fishing Day in 2022.
